چکیده
Like any company that manages its resources with an eye on profitability, a cell regulates its constituent biomolecules, compensating for changes in internal function, external conditions, and sector or organismal trends. This issue’s Select focuses on new findings that reveal broad insights into how dynamic changes in RNAs and proteins are made and how those changes impact cellular function and fitness.

Sesterin as a biomolecule
Sestrins (Sesns), highly conserved stress-inducing metabolic proteins, are known to protect organisms against various harmful stimuli including DNA damage, oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and hypoxia. Sestrins regulate metabolism mainly through activation of AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) and inhibition of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). Sestrins also play a pivotal role...
متن کاملEnhancing protease activity assay in droplet-based microfluidics using a biomolecule concentrator.
We introduce an integrated microfluidic device consisting of a biomolecule concentrator and a microdroplet generator, which enhances the limited sensitivity of low-abundance enzyme assays by concentrating biomolecules before encapsulating them into droplet microreactors. We used this platform to detect ultralow levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) from diluted cellular supernatant and sho...
متن کاملCyclewise Operation of Printed MoS2 Transistor Biosensors for Rapid Biomolecule Quantification at Femtomolar Levels.
Field-effect transistors made from MoS2 and other emerging layered semiconductors have been demonstrated to be able to serve as ultrasensitive biosensors. However, such nanoelectronic sensors still suffer seriously from a series of challenges associated with the poor compatibility between electronic structures and liquid analytes. These challenges hinder the practical biosensing applications th...
متن کاملThe Effect of Herbicides Used in the Control of Water Hyacinth; Glyphosate, Glufosinate-Ammonium and Bispyribac Sodium on Diversity and Abundance of Planktonic Communities
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is native to the Amazon basin and is one of the worst aquatic weeds in the world. It has been an invasive species in aquatic ecosystems of northern Iran since 2011. The use of herbicides as a method of plant control is common and efforts are made to select a formulation with the least impact on the environment. In the current study, three types of herbicide...
متن کاملNanomagnetic competition assay for low-abundance protein biomarker quantification in unprocessed human sera.
A novel giant magnetoresistive sensor and uniform high-magnetic-moment FeCo nanoparticles (12.8 nm)-based detecting platform with minimized detecting distance was developed for rapid biomolecule quantification from body fluids. Such a system demonstrates specific, accurate, and quick detection and quantification of interleukin-6, a low-abundance protein and a potential cancer biomarker, directl...
